There are a few occasions when a search is not required or may be waived.
Visiting academic, postdoctoral fellow, resident appointee, less-than-half-time appointments, certain time-limited grant positions, and adjunct appointments are faculty positions that do not require searches.
Part-time, hourly staff positions also do not require a search.
Occasionally, a department will wish to promote or transfer a current staff member without the responsibility of a full search.
Faculty waivers may be considered when financial constraints, program continuity, extended leaves or an unexpected vacancy occur. Staff waivers may be requested when the appointment involves a trailing spouse, increased diversity in an area of under-utilization, or to retain institutional knowledge.
Waivers should be sparingly requested.
To request a waiver, the department should submit a written request stating the waiver’s justification, along with the candidate’s resume or CV and the job description to the Office of Equal Opportunity.
Approval of the waiver will be communicated, in writing, to the requesting department with a copy submitted to Human Resources or Faculty Affairs. Waiver approvals need to be attached to the hiring e-doc for documentation.
